Something Can Be Done For Vitiligo

September 24th, 2009 at 12:01 am » Comments Off

Several years ago, Dr. Benjamin Sieve, a professor at Tufts Medical School, compiled a comprehensive history of the vitiligo treatments in use dating back to the 1930’s and 1940’s, and the then-current thinking on the subject.

10 Signs You May Be An Annoying Health Freak

September 23rd, 2009 at 1:00 am » Comments Off

A few months ago, I posted something about being an annoying health freak and got plenty of great responses from my readers, some of whom have been blindsided by annoying health freaks and some of whom have been the culprits. Some memorable comments:

“Ugh. I met one yesterday… it was hummus this and tofu that. Like my no-carb chili came from the underside of truck or something.”
“I caught myself giving a lofat hint about yogurt the other day. My poor victim’s eyes were glossed over. I will have to apologize.”
“I have a friend who does that. She examines everything I eat and says something about it…I’m just about the only friend she has left. Now you can see why.”
“It is me!!! Yeah I am the annoying person the waitress hates due to everything on the side, no cheese and blah blah blah.”
“I wonder why some formerly (name your thing – fat, unhealthy, smoker) people feel they need to reform everyone. If anything, you would think there would be compassion and understanding. How soon people forget how hard it is to lose weight – exercise – stop smoking, etc.”

Those comments were so great, they inspired me to poke a little fun at myself (and other annoying fitness freaks) with this week’s article, 10 Signs You May Be An Annoying Health Freak. I confess, I’ve done most of the things on this list at one time or another. What about you? Do you see yourself or someone else as an annoying health freak? Leave a comment and then give us tips for the best way to give exercise advice.

Does bioperine stimulate repigmentation?

September 23rd, 2009 at 12:01 am » Comments Off

I’ve been wanting to try piperine as a potential cure for my vitiligo, but had a hard time finding it in St. Louis. Last weekend I finally came across a little store in the Central West End called, Golden Grocer. They have an impressive array of natural food, essential oils, vitamins, homeopathic concoctions, and magical potions. Okay, I’m kidding about the potions. Not only is this store a treasure trove of natural remedies, the sales staff was very informative and not in the least bit overbearing.
I bought BioPerine® because …

Adding a comment to a post is simple to do, but sometimes using apps on a site can be confusing. I thought I would go into the forum and start a few discussions to get things going, and I felt a little disoriented. After experimenting with the different options, I decided that I would add a mini-tutorial on how to use our forum, so you will feel comfortable.

1. make a profile

2.Scroll through the topics, click on one. Either comment on a message or add new message (new topic)

India foils bid to get patent for vitiligo cure

September 22nd, 2009 at 10:39 am » Comments Off

NEW DELHI: India has for the first time ever managed to foil a bio-piracy bid in a record three weeks
time.
Thanks to the recently created Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL), which has till now completed documenting over two lakh medical formulations of Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani to save them from piracy, the European Patent Office (EPO) has canceled its earlier “intent to grant patent” order to a Spanish company on the use of melon extract to cure vitiligo (leucoderma) — a disease that causes skin de-pigmentation to almost 65 million people …

Exercise of the Week - Around the World Lunges

September 22nd, 2009 at 1:01 am » Comments Off

It’s been awhile since I’ve talked about lunges and I know how sad my readers must be. To rectify this, I’m highlighting yet another variation on lunges that will instantly become your favorite (or, as with some of my clients, will cause you to involuntarily throw your shoe at me).

The around the world lunge (a.k.a., wheel lunge) is a great way to incorporate three exercises in one - a front lunge, a side squat and a reverse lunge. This moves hits every muscle in the hips, glutes and thighs and the balance challenge will engage your muscle fibers in a different way. You can also try a side lunge rather than a squat, if you want to keep things a bit more lunge-y.

The key is to keep this move slow and controlled and try to use the strength of your legs rather than momentum as you move from one exercise to the next. You can also hold weights for added intensity.

Do it right: Step forward with the left foot and lower into a lunge, keeping the front knee behind the toe. Step back and immediately step to the left into a squat (or a side lunge). Step back and take the left foot back into a reverse lunge. Come back to start and repeat for 8-16 reps before switching legs.

Our site has an abundance of information shared by the many readers from around the world.  Some leave comments about products they have tried, and others leave detailed information describing the experimental processes they are using to try and find a cure for vitiligo.though this useful information is readily accessible by either browsing each post or clicking a word in the tag cloud, it would be much simpler for everyone if we use the forum to communicate.  Take a moment now and check out the new forum http://vitiligocover.com/forum/

Vote in This Week’s Poll: What’s Your Biggest Health Regret?

September 21st, 2009 at 1:00 am » Comments Off

<SCRIPT LANGUAGE= “javaScript” SRC=”http://guidepolls.about.com/exercise/3287620848/poll.js?linkback=“>

From the title of this post, you might be thinking - “Gee, thanks for bringing me down on a Monday, Debby Downer.” I realize that thinking about regrets isn’t the most enjoyable activity but, every now and then, getting reflective about the past can be cathartic - especially when it comes to health and fitness.

I say that because, for many situations, it’s never too late to turn things around. So, even if you regret that you’ve worked too much and exercised too little, or that you’ve spent too much time following silly diets, there’s no reason you can’t change that. Some regrets go deeper than others and it helps to learn how to let go of them so you can move forward.

What do you regret about your health and fitness past? Would you change some of your decisions if you could? What have you learned that might help people avoid health regrets? I realize there are so many possibilities, I couldn’t possibly include them all in a limited poll so, vote if you find one that fits and, if not, leave a comment to tell us about it.

Avoid Regret

Will a break in laser treatments yield change?

September 20th, 2009 at 11:08 pm » Comments Off

A couple of weeks ago I told you about my dermatologist taking a 3 month break from my treatments so as to protect my skin. My main concern was whether the newly pigmented skin would encourage new pigmentation in the surrounding areas or if it would fade.
I haven’t been using the protopic or taking my vitamins, because i wanted to view the results without interference. I believe the new pigmentation is slowly fading. And I’m noticing that some of the areas that were previously pink (normally the precursor to pigmentation) …
