Plyometrics is not a new concept. It has been used for improving performance for years. It is just recently that it has gained wide attention. The word Plyometrics has been in use since the 1960’s. Plyometric training is based on using movements that are similar to the type of movement that would be done in a particular sport or activity to improve performance. Several studies have demonstrated that a combination of Plyometrics and weight training is far more effective in improving speed and strength (power).
Benefits

1. Improves muscle response time

2. Increases muscle performance

3. Tones muscles

4. Improved balance and posture

5. Increases flexibility, reducing capability for injury

Plyometrics, employed to develop power and explosive responsiveness, uses the Stretch-Shorten Cycle (SSC). The whole idea is to develop the most amount of force in the shortest possible time. When a muscle is flexed or shortened, it’s under tension and will react with a more powerful and explosive contraction due to stored elastic energy. Unlike most other aerobic exercises, gravity becomes a major factor in the workout routine. Strength and flexibility are prerequisites for Plyometric training. The laws of Physics apply. A one-g force is equal to your weight. Two or more g’s of force may be exerted by an individual during a jump. For example, a 250-pound (114 kg) individual would subject forces equal to or greater than 500 lbs (227 kg) of pressure on hip, knee and ankle joints. A 100 (45 kg) pound person would experience force equal to or greater than 200 pounds (91 kg). It’s obvious that too much Plyometric training can be damaging to joints, as is the case with all types of exercise.

As is the case in all other types of training, technique is the key. In this case, as they say in piloting, landing is the most important of all. When the body meets the ground is where the potential for damage is highest. Land like a cat. The joints should not be stiff. Allow the legs to act as a shock absorber. The best way to land is to pretend that you are jumping off of a step behind someone and you don’t want them to hear you land. This is true for running as well. Use the body’s natural ability the absorb shock. If you hear a lot of noise when you run or land from a jump, remember that energy was used to create that noise and your body was the instrument. Keep it quiet. Some people advocate landing on the ball of the foot and some on the full foot. Either way, energy must smoothly and evenly transfer up the leg. The use of arms in a jump has been shown to contribute up to 10% of the jump results.

When a muscle is eccentrically contracted (stretched or elongated) and then subsequently concentrically contracted (flexed or shortened) the speed of the contraction is increased thereby creating a more powerful contraction similar to a stretched rubber band. In the real world, muscles undergo a more complex movement involving muscle groups and greater neural interaction than what can be achieved in regular weight training.

There is some controversy as to whether plyometrics are safe. The question is answered by moderation. All types of exercise can be damaging if done to excess or just trying to do too much too soon. Start out small. Use low jumps until your body becomes adapted for balance and timing. Unfortunately the stories come from people just not willing to give their body a break, rest in between workouts and vary their workouts. Running everyday is not good either. Unless you have joint problems, Plyometrics is as safe as any other exercise and provides another area of physical training.

Try boxing’s speedy workout. Want to punch out some job stress, get sweat-drenching aerobic workout and build sinewy muscle? Then get yourself a boxer’s speed bag. A speed bag is a great cross-training tool. It improves eye-hand co-ordination and timing. It’ll condition your arms, back, buttocks and legs. You can beat it. Well, actually, you can.

The move

1. Hang your bag at eye level and slip on some training gloves.

2. Stand far enough away so you can touch the leather with arm extended.

3. Spread your feet comfortably. If you’re a righty, your left foot should be forward slightly; opposite if you’re a lefty.

4. Next, position your arms so they form a 45-degree angle in front of your chest with your knuckles pointing towards the ceiling. As you throw a punch, push off your back leg and hit the bag with the flat front of you fist; don’t lock your elbows out.

5. Start with two-right-two-lefts exercise. Throw a punch with your right hand. Recoil.

6. Wait for the bag to hit the wood three times (dat-dat-dat), and then throw another right. After the next three beats, punch with the left, wait for dat-dat-dat, and then throw another left and so on.

After a couple of weeks of practice, you should be able to throw these combinations smoothly without missing. Do three-minute sets to simulate rounds of boxing.

By: Mike Mahler

You never really know what is going to happen in your life. Everything can be going along just fine and then out of nowhere everything changes in an instant. Sometimes, when you are faced with adversity, you discover a side of yourself that you may not have been aware of. A few years ago, I went on a ski trip with my family to Utah. I never would have thought that the trip would have such a profound effect on my life. I really looked forward to the trip and was happy to get away from my life for a while.

I was in between jobs and was not feeling very confident. I was going through one of those times in which you reach a crossroad and are not sure which way to go. Anyway, while snowboarding in Utah, I was shocked with how bright and powerful the sun was. The first day on the slopes, I made the mistake of not putting on any sunscreen and got sunburned severely. I made sure to wear sunscreen over the next several days. However, my sunburn continued to get worse and I decided to sit out on the last day of the trip.

After returning from the trip, I soon realized that my sunburn was taking a long time to heal. When it finally did heal, I was left with some di-pigmentation on the right side of my face and neck. Also, I developed some white patches on the top of my head. When the hair grew out on the di-pigmented are of my chin, it was pure white. I had no idea what was going on, but was not too worried. I thought that it was just a severe reaction to the sun and that it would heal soon. A few more weeks went by, and still no improvement. Now I was starting to get concerned and decided to see a dermatologist.

Doctor’s Advice

The dermatologist informed me that I had developed a skin condition called Vitiligo. He explained that Vitiligo is a condition in which one’s immune system attacks itself and results in some loss of pigmentation. He went on to state that Michael Jackson had the disease as well and actually made his skin completely white so that the patches would not be so noticeable. He continued to state that there was no cure for the condition. However, there were some therapies that some people were having some success with.

He prescribed some creams for me. Unfortunately, after a few months, there was no improvement. I began to become very insecure about the condition and got worried that I would have it permanently. I started noticing people staring at me or taking a double take. This made me even more insecure. In addition, as a single young male my confidence dropped tremendously. As I stated earlier, I was not feeling too confident before getting Vitiligo. Now, I felt even worse. I kept on wishing that I could go back in time when my face looked normal and take advantage of the way that I looked. Now it was too late and I would have to settle with looking like a “freak.” I kept wondering why this had happened to me.

What did I do to deserve this? I kept thinking about what I could have done to prevent the condition from occurring. Maybe if I wore sunscreen that day, it never would have happened. Maybe if I did not go on the trip at all, it never would have happened. Several dermatologists assured me that there was no connection between the sunburn and the condition and that I probably would have developed the condition at some point. Their assurances did not make me feel any better.

The more I thought about the condition and the possibility of having it for the rest of my life, the worse I felt. I started feeling more and more sorry for myself and that just made matters worse. When friends and family told me that it was not a big deal, I got even angrier. Who were they to tell me anything? They were not the ones that had to live with the affliction! Every time I caught a glimpse of a mirror, it was like a slap in the face. When I spoke to people, I would try to keep them on my left side so that they would not see the condition.

Out of necessity, I managed to land a good job in sales and moved on a little bit. Of course, the problem was that the job put me in contact with more people. Being in sales is hard enough when you look “normal.” However, it is much more difficult with Vitiligo on your face. I always felt that people were looking at my skin instead of listening to what I was saying. I often felt like I had to find a way to explain what happened to me. I wanted everyone to know that I was not born like this and that I used to be normal.

I soon realized that I had to do something immediately to boost my confidence. I discovered some cover-up products that blended in with the skin to make the condition look less obvious. As a man, I was not comfortable with the prospect of wearing make-up. Nevertheless, I felt that it had to be better than not covering it up. Thus, I started wearing the cover-up. Initially, it boosted my confidence. I felt like I looked much better and that I was almost back to normal. It is funny how your attitude changes everything about your life.

I soon attracted an amazing woman into my life and landed a much better job. Things were looking pretty good and I was feeling much better. I had days in which I forgot that I even had Vitiligo and did not focus on it as much. However, like a nagging pain or worry, it kept coming back to me until I decided to look at some more treatments.

Treatments

I tried a few more creams that did not do anything. Next, I decided to try a treatment called PUVA in which you expose the effected area to UV light. Although PUVA has worked well for some people, it did not work well for me. After the first treatment, I suffered a serious burn that was so painful, that it hurt to eat or even move around. Fortunately, I healed up after a few weeks. Regardless, I had no intention to try PUVA again. That experience was a major turning point in my life.

I started thinking about what bothered me about having Vitiligo so much. After all, it is more of a cosmetic problem than anything else. Who was I wearing the make-up for?

Why was I so worried about what other people thought? When I was a teenager, I had dreadlocks and dressed like I was in a heavy metal band. I used to get stared at and received negative attention all of the time. Nevertheless, I did not care at all. I came to a place in which I realized that I had to accept the Vitiligo into my life. I had to become one with it and ascertain the hidden message. I decided to stop wearing the make-up and face the world. I thought that if anyone has a problem with the way that I look, then that is their problem, not mine. If people look at me in horror or disgust, then they have bigger problems than I will ever have. My Vitiligo became a superficiality test. If someone looked down on me for having the condition, then that was not someone that I wanted to associate with.

After that day, I found myself taking risks that I would never have taken when my skin was fine. Why? Because I did not want the skin condition to hold me back from doing anything. Every time I hesitated to do something, I asked myself if it was my condition that was holding me back. Whether the answer was yes or no did not really matter. Just asking the question forced me to take action. I remembered that everything in life happens for a reason and that we never really know when something is positive or negative. Sometimes events that are seen as negatives are simply lessons in disguise. Sometimes we need to learn these lessons in order to rise to a higher level of awareness.

Living With Vitiligo

Am I saying that I am glad that I developed Vitiligo? Of course not. Am I saying that I would not be interested in a cure? Of course not. All that I am saying is that I have learned to live with Vitiligo instead of against it. It has been with me for two years and who knows how long it will stay with me. Perhaps, when I have learned what I need to learn, it will move on. Perhaps, it will never move on. In the meantime, it is part of me and life goes on.

Published in the International Journal of Sports Medicine, the study compared women who followed a three-month regimen of moderate-intensity workouts, such as brisk walks, with those who engaged in more high-intensity exercise such as sprinting.

At the end of three months, the moderate-intensity exercise group was found to have shed significantly more weight than the high-intensity group, an average of seven pounds each compared with four pounds each.

Researchers suggested that women in the high-intensity exercise group may have engaged in post-exercise overeating as a result of fatigue.

A resistance band workout is one of the very best workouts for many people. These elastic bands are a versatile alternative to training with weights.

In this article we will take a look at the advantages of a resistance band workout. We will highlight how they can be used with other types of exercises. And we will show how resistance bands may be an ideal tool for your workouts.

Resistance bands are hollow elastic tubes that are becoming an increasingly popular accessory in many folks workout arsenal. There are two basic types of resistance bands. There is the simple closed loop type and the open loop type that has handles on either end. Either type can give you a thorough workout.

These bands are made in a variety of resistance levels. The heavier and thicker the band, the more resistance it produces. You can use different bands for different exercises much as you would use different weights in a dumbbell or barbell workout.

With a little ingenuity, the resistance bands can mimic most any exercise performed with weights. This versatility is one of their major advantages. In addition, working out with resistance bands is a very safe way to train. You do not need a spotter when training with the bands. You can change resistance simply and quickly with resistance bands. Simply change bands or shorten the length of the band and you have effectively changed the resistance. Being able to change resistance quickly in your resistance band workout helps to increase the cardiovascular benefit of your workout session.

That convenience of a resistance band workout is another advantage. It is easy to take your bands with you when traveling on a vacation or business trip. Simply throw a couple of bands in your suitcase and you will have everything you need to workout while away from home. A resistance band workout is especially suited for many seniors and women. If you want a workout that builds strength and keeps you fit, resistance bands are ideal. About the only ones that could not get the strength training they desire from training with resistance bands are bodybuilders who want to add huge amounts of muscle mass to their physique.

Even if you need to use weights to build a lot of muscle mass, resistance bands can be used as an addition to your workout. They can be especially helpful when training your core and abdominal muscles. Hopefully, this article has shown how resistance bands can give you a great workout. Resistance bands are versatile and easy to use. You can build your strength and stability with this safe exercise option. Resistance bands will go with you when you are away from home. They meet the needs of seniors, women, and anyone else that wants to build strength without building extreme muscle mass. Consider a resistance band workout as your way of staying strong and fit.

What is the Labyrinth?
The labyrinth is a single path arranged in a pattern. Unlike a maze, which aims to confuse and disorient those who walk it, a labyrinth offers only one possible route; the same path leads inward to the center, then outward again. The journey ends where it began.

Labyrinths come in many forms. Some are permanent works of art, inlaid in marble or tile on the floors of cathedrals; others are marked out more simply, by stones on the beach, masking tape on a floor, chalk on pavement, or paint on canvas. Living labyrinths are sculpted from low hedges in the midst of gardens. Finger labyrinths, which are usually carved from wood or stone, enable those who cannot see or walk to travel the labyrinth by tracing the path with their fingers.

What is the history of the Labyrinth?
The labyrinth is ancient. Thousands of years ago, people carved the pattern of the labyrinth in stone, marked it out with rocks in the desert, or cut it into the turf in village greens. The spiral motif was imprinted on coins, and woven into fabric and baskets. From Iceland to India, Mexico to the Mediterranean, Scandinavia to Spain, there is evidence for the use of labyrinths.

During the Middle Ages, the Christian Church adapted the basic form of the labyrinth and made it less linear. Instead of simply spiralling inward, the path was newly designed to twist and turn, creating a complex pattern which resembled a cross. Although evidence is scarce, it has been suggested that the path of the labyrinth was meant to represent the road to and from Jerusalem. In an age when pilgrimage to holy places was cherished as a sacred act, the inward and outward movement of the labyrinth may have offered to those unable to leave home a way of imitating that pilgrimage.

What is the purpose of the Labyrinth?
Many people find that the gentle and rhythmic act of walking drives away distractions and creates a welcome space for prayer and meditation. Some people choose to repeat a brief prayer over and over as they focus on each step; others prefer to allow their thoughts to roam freely. Those burdened by worry, confusion or uncertainty may use the labyrinth as a place of prayer for divine guidance and the gift of discernment.

However you choose to use it, remember that the labyrinth is simply a tool for prayer and contemplation. In and of itself it possesses no special powers. Walking the path can indeed relieve anxiety, clear the mind and calm the spirit, but it is not the labyrinth itself which is the source of peace, clarity or discernment. Rather, the labyrinth can serve as one means by which the spirit offers gifts to those who seek them.

How do I use the Labyrinth?
Here are some suggestions for walking the labyrinth:

Take off your shoes

This simple act recalls the biblical story of Moses who, when confronted by the presence of God, took off his shoes in acknowledgment that the place where he stood was holy ground. Entering the labyrinth barefoot or in sock feet is a sign of recognition that the labyrinth is a place where surprising encounters with God may occur. Taking off your shoes also helps to preserve and care for the labyrinth.

Maintain the Quiet

The labyrinth is intended to be a place of peace. Complete silence is not necessary; sometimes soothing background music can enhance the experience of the walk. However, humming, talking or singing may be distracting to others. If you wish to ask questions about the labyrinth, or to have a conversation about your experience, please do so outside.

Walk Slowly and Follow the Path

Our world can be loud and hurried, chaotic and confusing. The labyrinth offers an opportunity to step outside the noise and haste. Savour the silence and and the slowness. Take your time. There is no need to rush. Concentrate on each step rather than racing toward the centre. Remember that there is only one path; you do not have to worry about choosing a direction and you cannot get lost. Enjoy the freedom and trust the path to lead you to the centre.

At the Centre

When you reach the centre of the labyrinth, find a posture that is comfortable for you and take some time to rest. Remember, though, there is still a long path ahead of you. You may feel you want to remain in this special place, but you cannot stay here. The outward journey is as significant as the inward journey. When you are ready, continue along the path.

Remember that you share the path

As you walk, you will encounter other people. When you meet someone on the path, simply acknowledge one another with a nod or eye contact, then step aside slightly to make room so that you can pass each other. If someone behind you is moving more quickly than you are, pause and make room for that person to pass by. Likewise, feel free to walk around those ahead of you who are travelling the path more slowly. Because of the pattern of the labyrinth, you may find that you walk side by side with someone for a while, then your paths diverge. Perhaps you will meet again further along; perhaps not. In either case, you may wish to offer thanks to God for the people whom you meet along the way; it is good to know we do not walk alone.

Afterward: The Mystery of the Labyrinth
After you have completed your journey on the labyrinth, you may find it helpful to spend some time reflecting on the experience. You might ask yourself a few questions:
Did I perceive my own life reflected in the twists and turns of the path?
Have I found clarification or help with a decision with which I have been struggling?
Did I feel close to God along the path, or far away? What might I learn from this?
Do I have new insight into what it means to walk the Way in the company of others?
Writing notes in a journal may help you become more aware of your thoughts, feelings, questions and observations. Or, if you prefer, you may wish to paint, draw or sculpt a symbol which expresses something about your experience.

Walking the labyrinth can be a one-time event, or it can become part of a regular spiritual practice. Be aware that your experience of the labyrinth will likely be quite different each time, so every journey on the labyrinth offers a brand new opportunity to encounter the your spirit. Trust the Spirit of God to guide you in the way you need to go.

Most people are focused on fat. We all hear about the idea that fat is not something good nowadays. Since the time we are small children everyone taught us that fat is not good for us. In fact, some may be worried about calories rather than fat. To be frank you should be worrying about both of them. You should try to avoid junk food. It is always a good idea to get calories from foods that are good for your health.

Most people eat bread every day of their lives. To some extents we are addicted to carbs. I know I am. I eat so much bread and other carbs. However, I will not eat too much of it. It is just like the case of fat. There is nothing wrong when you eat fat. However, eating too much of it will render problem. You will be suffering from the problem of hear attack if you take too much of fat. What is even worse is that you do not really exercise at all.

In fact, not all fat is the same though. Some fat is worse than others. There are items that are lower in saturated fat. For example, meats and cheeses fall into this category. On the other hand, there is food that contains more saturated fat. Some of the examples of such food will be French fries and potato chips.

You may think that oils are also not good since in most cases oil is just another word of fat. However, you should also know that oils such as olive oil are low in saturated fats. As a result, you should try to use this for cooking. Of course you should use as little oil as possible. Sometimes we will overuse oil because the food gets stuck on the cookware. To this end you should try to use non sticky cookware. This will help you to reduce the use of oil and this will probably make you healthier.

As you may know, you will be in health risks if you have diets high in fat. You are at higher risk of having sugar problems and heart disease. You may also have the risk of having cancer. Skin problem will also appear if you take diets of high fat. Remember, taking little fat will not render any problem to you. However, if you continuously take a lot of fat, the chance is that you will have a lot of health problem!

It can be said that the new movement towards perfect bodies is not a new movement at all. What has sparked the sudden rush to exercise, watch diet and be mindful of nutritional habits is simply the publicity that has been spearheaded by the media regarding the importance of physical fitness.

Men too, just like women, attach a heavy premium to the way they look. To men, the bronze appearance of Brad Pitt or the rugged boyish looks of Ben Affleck have to be emulated at all costs. Sadly, men have to wrestle with the tendency to accumulate fat especially in the bellies and “wings,” which end up forming a fatty ring commonly referred to as the love handle. As sweet as they sound, love handles are the nightmare of every man who wants to develop six pack abs and a trim appearance reminiscent of a modern day Spartan athlete.

Why is it to easy for men to accumulate belly fat and also develop love handles? Is there something in their genetic makeup that makes this part of the body susceptible to fatty accumulation? According to researchers, this is not necessarily the case. Women, too, have a problem keeping a flat stomach especially after they pass 30.

This is predominantly because of a general slow-down in body metabolism, which results in less energy being burned by the body and more food being restored. This inevitably leads to an accumulation of fat in the belly and an additional unsightly “ring” of fatty tissue develops right in the mid-section. This is what is commonly referred to as the “love handle.”

How can men rid themselves of belly fat and love handles?

Exercise
Love handles and belly fat occurs because there is more food storage as opposed to food burned. This slowdown in metabolism can be as a result of age or can be caused by an under-reactive thyroid gland. In some cases one could be suffering from a low digestive enzyme count. When a slowing of the metabolic rate causes the problem, exercise can correct this. This is because exercise burns the stored fatty deposits and releases more energy so that the person is more energetic. Specific exercises that target this part of the body, such as sit-ups or working on the bench-press can eradicate belly fat and love handles

Diet
Food rich in fat can result in an accumulation of fat and surely lead to a hefty belly. Beer can also accelerate this process. It is recommended that a diet rich in fruits, white meat, low-fat milk and fibers be adopted in order to replace the fat-depositing diets.

Dietary supplements
There are some diet supplements that can be purchased from manufactures. But be careful make sure you know all about the product you are taking. Digestive enzymes can also be purchased and these are very effective because they act as digestive accelerators causing more food to be digested faster and used up for energy requirements instead of being stored.
