Murder of Your Motivation: Part 3

Set the Vision and Beat It

So far we have sacrificed time out to began a fitness program, set our realistic goals for our fitness vision, and part three will almost contradict part two. What is the vision, or better yet who is the vision? We will go into our minds and explore the vision that you have, and how you would like to look.

We will begin with how you look now and then we will traverse to the future expectation. If you recall the last article, I said do not mark your progress based on looks because you will not be able to precisely chart based on your naked eye. I said use numbers as in weight, inches, days of consistent workouts, or use the numbers as the weights you are using and how much your strength has improved, but what is the picture on the bullseye? Do you have a photo of how you look now compared to a photo ten years ago, a high school photo, or a wedding photo. Do you have a celebrity or super model picture. Find one of these pictures and look at the difference. Go ahead. The first step is facing the problem. There is no one to blame but yourself, but the good news is there is now and not now. An old African proverb teaches that you can’t change the past or the future and the only control that we have is now. What are you going to do about it now? We learn our mistakes through history; not just your history, but your parent’s history, your friend’s history, or even celebrity’s history.

I’m saddened by the loss of the renowned singer, Gerald Levert, but I can learn that I need a proper diet and exercise in my youth to minimize the risk of a heart attack in the future. I remember Lyle Alzado, a great football player. I’ll remember him as one of my childhood heroes, but I learned the deadly side effects of steroid use through his death.

Look at your family. Are they financially sound? Look through the history. Do they have bad spending habits? Do they have a plan for the future? Have they covered all the bases including the rising costs of health care and just living? Now and not now.

You can’t change what’s behind you, and you don’t know what’s coming, but you can make smart decisions daily that will affect your future. Look at the lives of people who are successful in what you lack and mimic their lives. We all know apples trees will always make apples. If I want to be a great football player, I will look at Walter Payton’s life and not Ozzie Smith’s. Contrary argument; if I want to be a great athlete, then I can look at what both of these great athletes did in the pre-season, season, and off-season. If I suck at finance, then there are plenty of books I can read about people who are good at money matters. The same principles works for everyone. Invest the time and read.

Do you have an outfit that you can’t fit in anymore? Now and not now. What more inspiration do you need than that? Get into your fit! One of my requirements for my clients is to take an outfit they can’t fit in, and hang it on the refrigerator or the food pantry as a reminder of the goal when they weigh the options of cheating. Get into your fit! Another way you get it going and keep it going is to buy an outfit from the store that you would like to fit in and you are off to the races! Whoops! Its past thirty days and you can’t get a refund! Fifty jumping jacks! Right now! Is there a big event coming up where you want to make a hit? Is there a wedding in six months, a company event, or a big NYE’s party! (See if you don’t wait until January to set your goals, you can show out at the NYE party! See Part one!). Hang the outfit up and in plain view to remind yourself what you are sacrificing for.

The last vision requires a great balance, which is why I’m separating it from the rest. I am in no way jealous or envious of my friends and family. I support their goals and I celebrate their achievements. We cry and laugh together. We crumble and build together. I said that to say that none of them will ever catch me! I keep them in the back of my head every time I set foot in a gym. Their progress is my vision. They won’t! I have some friends who lift weights and they will wear their clothes to reveal the progress in the physique. They won’t catch me! Their progress is my vision. I remind myself of every day they are in the gym whether or not they are actually in the gym! I am not one to talk about how I need to get started working out! I leave that to them. I draw a fine line with my friends. I love them to death. My best friend has just begun a fitness program and I was ready. I encouraged him and he said he’ll catch me in a couple of months. It slid off his tongue just like that. I thought to myself is that right? We are both mature to know that we are in it for the health reasons, but I’m not leaving the gym if I know he’s in it! I am not an arrogant person if we ever get the chance to meet, but if you catch me in my house (The gym) you best believe I’m there to move weight. I also respect someone else’s house. If the piano is your house then I respect the house. If salsa dancing is your house then I respect the house. Respect mine. I am not the best aerobics instructor and if I’m ever out done by one of my class members, then I must respect the house. It hasn’t happened yet, but I have come close. You know that person in your aerobics class that‘s been in class since the invention of aerobics. Nothing makes them tired! You have a small swimming pool up front from sweating, and they are in the back just chilling out. They live in St. Louis! It’s all good. I said all that to encourage friendly competition with your friends and cohorts. Remember to balance not becoming an arrogant or a cocky person.

So once again I said all that I had to say to encourage you to make a vision and keep the vision when you feel like quitting. Look at that outfit! Stay the course and enjoy the journey. Encourage and friendly ‘compete’ with friends and family. Write the vision and make it plain. We are working hard for a reason and I look forward to hearing about the progress.
